JUNCTIONS

Glands are formed by the epithelial cells that border a lumen (L). The plasma membranes of neighboring cells attach to each other by various junctions which include tight junction (green arrowheads), gap junction (red arrowheads) and desmosome (brown arrowheads). Pink arrowheads point to the secretory products within the epithelial cells and blue arrowheads to the microvilli found on the cell surface. In the gap junction (nexus), the outer leaflets of the plasma membranes of opposing cells are separated by a space that is about 20 angstrom in width. In the intermediate junctions (zonula adherens and fascia adherens), the intercellular space is wider and is about 200 angstrom in width and is filled by an electron dense and amorphous material.
