PERSPECTIVE In conclusion, the implantation theory still remains the most widely accepted concept to explain the pathogenesis of endometriosis. Under normal conditions, the peritoneal defense system is capable of coping with the reflux of menstrual debris. The question that still remains is why, only in some women, this process leads to disabling complications.
