INSULIN RESISTANCE. DEFINITION For the purposes of this review, peripheral insulin resistance is defined as inhibition of normal insulin stimulation of whole body glucose uptake. Hepatic insulin resistance is defined as inhibition of normal insulin suppression of hepatic glucose production. Insulin stimulation of total body glucose uptake and insulin suppression of hepatic glucose production were determined with the hyperinsulinemic clamp technique (11). |
