Late neural fold stage (embryo stage 17)
At this stage, the somites are being formed. The first three somites are separated from the paraxial mesoderm. The convergence of the sensorial layer of the neurectoderm has caused marked thickening of the neural anlage in the dorsal region. The eye anlage in the prosencephalic region of the brain has beginun its invagination. The liver diverticulum has deep-ened and extends ventrally.
