Development of embryo during
the first two weeks
Two-cell, cleaved, zygote (Carnegie stage 2)

At this stage, the fertilized zygote is surrounded by sperms and is actively dividing. The polar body may still be observed. In artificial in vitro fertilization, the fertilized egg is allowed to reach to the 4 to 8 cell stage before it is transferred to the uterine cavity. Normally, several (3-4) such fertilized eggs are placed in the uterus.
