CHOLANGIOCARCINOMA OF THE LIVER



DISTINCTIVE FEATURES

This tumor arises from the intrahepatic biliary tract.
Patients may have history of protracted parasitic infection (Clonorchis or Opisthorchis sinensis or other related members), treatment with thorotrast, or Carnoli's disease
Cirrhosis not usually present.
This tumor has a poor prognosis.
Metastasizes to the liver itself, local lymph nodes and the lung.
Grossly appears as a single or multiple pale, white, firm masses.
Microscopically consists of bile ductules and may resemble adenocarcinomas. Some tumors are well differentiated whereas some other tumors are poorly differentiated.
