The menstrual shedding results from expression of a distinct molecular repertoire.
Some of the members of this moleculare repertoire are expressed immediately prior to the menstruation (TNF-alpha, TGF-beta 4) and some during menstruation (matrix metalloprotease)
TGF-beta 4 is a member of the transforming growth factors whose expression is seen primarily in the late secrtory/menstrual phase
Figure legend: In situ hybridization of the TGF-beta 4 in human endometrium. The TGF-beta 4 mRNA is expressed primarily in the stroma. Glands and vessels (arrows) do not exhibit TGF-beta 4 mRNA. Top: Anti-sense hybridization signal. Bottom: Sense hybridization signal.
