FEATURE

Squamous metaplasia

Leiomyoma, Endometrial polyp, administration of estrogen, polycystic ovarian disease, adenocarcinoma (adenoacanthoma)

Non-keratinizing squamous metaplasia of endometrial epithelium, either diffuse (adenoacanthosis), or localized (morules)

Keratinizing squamous metaplasia (ichthyosis uteri)

Ciliated cell (tubal) metaplasia

Normal, Endometrial hyperplasia

Ciliated cells resembling those in the fallopian tube

Papillary metaplasis

Prolonged estrogen administration

Syncytial to papillary growth of eosinophilic epithelium in the surface epithelium

Mucinous metaplasia

Mucinous cells similar to those in the endocervical epithelium

Eosinophilic (oxyphilic) metaplasia

Estrogen

Eosinophilic epithelium lacking atypia

Hobnail and clear cell (mesonephric) metaplasia

Hobnail or clear cells lacking atypia

Intestinal metaplasia

Epithelium resembling intestinal epithelium

Stromal metaplasia

Smooth muscle, cartilage and bone within the stroma
