Domestic violence hotline

President Clinton announced a Nationwide Domestic Violence Hotline. The line will provide immediate crisis intervention assistance to those in need. Operators can offer information, referrals, counseling and assistance in reporting cases of abuse to survivors, family members, neighbors and the general public concerned about domestic violence. Help is also available for non-English speakers, and the hearing impaired.

The voice number is 1-800-799-SAFE (1-800-799-7233), and the TTD number for the hearing impaired is 1-800-787-3224.

Funding for the hotline is via three HHS agencies: Administration for Children and Families, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention by the Violence Against Women Act within the 1994 Crime Bill. The Texas Council on Family Violence in Austin will staff and operate the hotline.
