FRONTIERS IN BIOSCIENCE;
PubMed Central/Biosci

On May 5, 1999, Harold Varmus, presented to the world, his thoughts on creation of a platform for communication of manuscripts of biomedical researchers. The draft of creation of this electronic platform which was orginally called PubMed Central and now is called PubMed Central, was written by Harold Varmus with assistance from Dr Lipman, the Director of National Center for Biotechnology Information (NLM/NIH) and Pat Brown from Stanford University. Harold Varmus has asked for comments from scientists regarding such an electronic platform for publication of scientific data. The issue has raised debates. Comments of the responders are posted regularly at the PubMed Central site. Frontiers in Bioscience applauds the effort of Harold Varmus and his colleagues and strongly supports this initiative in creation of this important platform for scientific communication. The site will publish the manuscripts published in peer reviewed journals as well as manuscripts submitted and accepted by a peer review process which is overseen by the editorial boards of PubMed Central. The unique feature of the manuscripts published in PubMed Central is that they are available in full text and free of charge to the public. It is anticipated that the PubMed Central will be the virtual medical library of future. Other important information, books and perhaps even lectures will also be posted at PubMed Central. Scientists will be able to gain free access to the full length manuscripts and without the need of paying a subscription fee. The data presented in these manuscripts is derived from efforts of scientists who, in many instances, are supported by the the funds provided by NIH. Such efforts will insure access to scientific literature, fosters science and research and will free all of us from the constraints in accessing the full length manuscripts which are currently imposed by publishers of biomedical journals for monetary gains. We pledge that manuscripts published in the Frontiers in Bioscience will be made available to the PubMed Central in full length. We hope that the scientific community shares our enthusiasm and will support the development of such a site. We encourage all scientists to submit their thoughts and ideas regarding this type of electronic publishing to PubMed Central.

In addition to PubMed central, the European E-BioSci project that was proposed by the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) after discussion with Varmus and others is now in an advanced planning stage. Frontiers in Bioscience will also be included in the European E-BioSci databases.Interested individuals can contact Les Grivell, PhD E-BioSci/EMBO Postfach 1022.40 Meyerhofstrasse 1 69117 Heidelberg, Germany Email: les.grivell@embo.org Tel. +49-6221-889 1503 or -889 1102 (secretariats); +49-6221-889 1501 (direct) Fax. +49-6221-889 1210 for further information.
